  • Letrozole

TTC since June 2020. Was diagnosed with PCOS in November 2020. I don't seem to ovulate on my own, so my OBGYN has started me on Letrozole (2.5mg dose). I have just finished my first round, so hoping this works! Wondering what others' experiences have been with Letrozole?

Letrozole is an oral medication that's often used off-label to induce ovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who are trying to conceive. It's primarily used for breast cancer treatment, but it's also found to be effective in promoting ovulation by suppressing estrogen production and thereby increasing the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. This, in turn, can stimulate the development and release of mature eggs from the ovaries.

Here are a few points to consider about Letrozole and its use for fertility:
    1. Effectiveness: Letrozole is considered to be effective in inducing ovulation in many women with PCOS. Studies have shown that it can lead to successful ovulation in a significant percentage of cases.
    2. Dosage: The typical starting dose is often 2.5mg per day, usually taken for five days starting from the second or third day of the menstrual cycle.
    3. Monitoring: Ovulation induction with Letrozole is often monitored using ultrasounds to track the growth of follicles. This helps your doctor determine the appropriate timing for intercourse or other fertility treatments.
    4. Success Rates: The success of Letrozole in terms of achieving pregnancy can vary depending on various factors, including the severity of PCOS, your age, and other underlying conditions.
    5. Side Effects: Letrozole generally has fewer side effects compared to some other ovulation-inducing medications. However, like any medication, it can still cause side effects such as hot flashes, headaches, fatigue, and mood changes.
    6. Multiple Pregnancy Risk: There's a slightly increased risk of having twins or multiples when using ovulation-inducing medications like Letrozole, so this is something to be aware of and discuss with your healthcare provider.
    7. Individual Variation: Every person's response to Letrozole can be different. Some women may respond well to lower doses, while others might require adjustments in dosage or additional treatments.
    8. Patience: The journey to conception can be challenging, and it's important to remain patient. Sometimes it might take a few cycles or adjustments in treatment before achieving a successful pregnancy.

Remember, it's crucial to stay in close communication with your OBGYN or fertility specialist throughout this process. If you have specific questions or concerns about your experience with Letrozole, it's best to discuss them with your healthcare provider or visit fertility treatment center, as they'll have the most relevant and up-to-date information tailored to your case.

Letrozole is commonly prescribed to induce ovulation in women with PCOS. Many individuals have had success with it, leading to successful pregnancies. However, individual experiences can vary, so it's essential to follow your doctor's guidance and monitor your progress closely. Be patient and stay positive, as it may take a few cycles to achieve the desired results.
